The first registrations were enabled in September 2006, and the idea behind this TLD is that all websites that use it have to comply with special rules. In other words, all .MOBI websites have to be designed to be viewed without problems by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” drawn by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in partnership with the dot MOBI Registry. These involve how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.

The regulations have provoked some worries considering that the generic TLD is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to open a website and the way in which this has to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be created in such a way as to be viewed by most browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
