If you decide to transfer a domain name from one domain registrar to another, you’ll need to go through a couple of security procedures. One of them is obtaining a special EPP authorization code from the present registrar company – as long as you are the registrant, since the code is emailed to the owner's email address and no one else can obtain it. You’ll need to provide this code to the new registrar company, otherwise they won’t be able to initiate the domain transfer procedure. The EPP authorization codes are case-sensitive and may contain digits or special characters such as commas or dots, which can be easily mistyped, so make sure you copy and paste the right code. As an extra safety measure, the transfer code for a domain may be changed on a regular basis. Some domain name registrars refer to this code as a domain secret, an Auth key or a domain password as well.
